Dimetrodon, meaning 'two measures of teeth', is often mistaken for a dinosaur, but it actually lived 40 million years before dinosaurs existed! It was a synapsid - more closely related to mammals than to dinosaurs. Its distinctive sail, supported by long spines, was likely used for temperature regulation or attracting mates.
